Due to our fast paced lives and on-the-go lifestyles, meals seem to have become a gobble and go fest instead of meaningful interactions at the dinner table with our family members. One of the most important and influential meals of the day is breakfast, which often gets side-lined due to kids school runs and early 8am meetings – or for some people not eaten at all! Breakfast is so important as it fuels you up for the day and equalises your blood sugar levels. It is a proven fact that people who eat breakfast can concentrate more, have more energy and eat healthier for the balance of the day. Without breakfast we become irritable, restless, tired and loose concentration and motivation. Here are our top 4 breakfasts for busy people:
- Oats – oats contain beta-glucans, a type of soluble fibre that slows down the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream. This slower digestion prevents dramatic spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels that would otherwise encourage our bodies to produce and store fat. Oats are quick and easy to cook and are great with some toasted almonds and cranberries sprinkled over the top.
- Eggs – boiled, scrambled, poached, omelettes… preferably not fried! Eggs are amongst the healthiest foods on the planet and contain an adequate amount of fat, protein and carbs to fuel our bodies until lunch time. They are also rich in antioxidants and help lower cholesterol. We love having poached eggs with some slices of avo for a nutritious breakie!
- Home-made Granola – Gilly, the queen bee of our delicious nougat, makes THE most amazing homemade granola. Rich in oats, coconut flakes, cranberries and nuts this breakfast cereal is fabulous as it contains no hidden fats and sugars like processed breakfast cereals do! Best served with some Greek yoghurt and honey.
- Smoothies – this is our firm favourite for a quick Summer breakfast and they can be adapted to suit any taste preferences. We love the peanut butter bomb which includes peanut butter, banana, plain yoghurt, honey, almonds and some ice. Another goodie is a Berry Blast which includes frozen berries, yogurt, banana, honey and some apple.
